The Easiest Way to Create a Wall Gallery with Family Photos

For many, a gallery wall with family photos is the ultimate home decor. Not only do you get to add beautiful artwork to your walls, but you get to show off your amazing family as well. Each wall gallery I design is totally custom to each of my families. No two clients are the same, so no wall gallery turns out the same. It’s all about each client’s preferences and, well, their story! Some clients come to me with a clear vision of what they want in their artwork, and sometimes, they come to me as a blank canvas. Both are totally fine.

If you dream of a wall gallery but want the easiest route to get there, I have you covered. I take care of this part for my clients, but here is my basic framework that you can follow!

Tell a Story

First, we want the wall gallery to tell your family’s story to everyone who walks into your home. Take a few moments to think about what that is for you. Each family is so unique, but every family I’ve photographed has been full of love. What else do you want to show? Does your family love to laugh? Do you have growing children you want to freezeframe? Jot down any thoughts that come to mind. We want to showcase these in the wall gallery!

Designing the Wall Gallery

Select the wall you want to use and map it out on a piece of paper. Draw what style gallery wall you’re looking to create. My clients can send a photo of their wall to me, and I can use my software to digitally mock up what the wall gallery will look like before we even have the session. This is great to be able to tell if you like the design or not before committing to anything. You can draw it on a piece of paper, though, and still get a great visual. Do you like one large piece with smaller pieces on either side? Do you like an eclectic look? Maybe you like one large statement piece instead? Create your outline here!

Plan the Family Photo Session

Now that we know the story we want to tell, we need to have the family photo session to create the portraits to hang on the wall! It’s important to choose a location and wardrobe that are beautiful, comfortable, and won’t distract from the artwork. My clients come to my studio or meet in the meadow for their portraits, and both these locations create a beautiful backdrop for your portrait. Choose outfits that are neutral and of classic styles so that your portraits won’t look dated in a few years.

Heirloom, Professional Framing

These aren’t frames you can just buy from the store. We want these portraits to hang on the walls for many years to come. High-quality professional framing will look spectacular and eye-catching. There are definitely times when it’s good to find a deal and times when investing in high-quality will pay off, and this is one of them.
