Choosing Locations that Keep the Focus on Your Family
I have often said, there are three must-have ingredients for an unforgettable portrait session; beautiful light, a sense of freedom + ease and most importantly: connection. One of my favourite ways to check all of these boxes is by choosing a location that serves my families in this way. Today I’m going to tell you about why this little unassuming meadow is North Woodstock is a favourite spot of mine…and how it helps brings essential elements together for beautiful sun-kissed portraits.
Mama Jela approached me about family photographs as a birthday present to herself. She wanted some very candid & casual portraits that really captured her girls and their wonderful personalities. We chose the meadow as our location because it’s not distracting, it’s fun for the kids to explore, worry-free and the light is so stunning at sunset.
Jela and her girls chose shades of pink, cream and khaki from the client wardrobe and we made sure it was steamed and ready the day before session day to make getting ready a breeze. This also gave me a chance to meet her children in person so that they warmed up to me quickly when we arrived at the location.
We explored the meadow as the sun moved lower into the horizon, giving these memories the most beautiful sparkle. It felt like the most carefree evening with a mix of play, family time and fun. When your kids are having fun and feel comfortable at a location it makes the experience so much more enjoyable…and the memories more meaningful, too.

Jela came with her Aunt to view the images we created on reveal day. Her original plan was to start with a trio of images, but she decided that she loved her portraits so much she wanted to feature statement gallery for her newly renovated family room. I love how much colour it adds to the space and that she chose portraits that really capture the love and personality of her two girls. She also chose a special image of her and her husband.
